A noise atternuation barrier was specified for the new Dalston Junction Bus & Rail terminus.

As well as being able to satisfy the requirements for noise attenuation, the barrier had to prove itself aesthetically pleasing, able to blend in with the architect’s scheme and the installation had to be designed so that there were no connections into the ground slab, as this was in fact the waterproof roof structure of the railway junction hall.

As can be seen from the images the scheme also presented many problems in terms of line, level and fit, given the very large number of direction changes and levels.

The barrier is a combination of Planta Classic Attenuation and Soundstop. These were chosen in order to meet the noise alternuation brief whilst minimising the overall height of the barrier making it less imposing.

All the posts are fixed directly to the in-situ concrete walls and the barriers are carried on the base plates of the posts.

All the post tops were rounded to add a little finishing touch.

Dalston Junction, East London Line Project
Client: Transport for London
Main Contractor: Balfour Beatty Carillion Joint Venture
Contracts Value: £112,000
Planta

The creation of a new Bus and Rail Link at Dalston Junction gave rise to the need for a noise attenuation barrier.

Not only did the barrier have to satisfy noise performance requirements, it had to blend in with the grey granite cladding specified for the adjacent walling.

Additionally the support posts could not be fixed via the base plates as no bolting was allowed to penetrate the waterproof roof sturcture.

RPC proposed a combination of Planta Classic and Soundstop from Kohlhauer Germany.

The Planta fullfilled the requirement for noise attenuation and the Soundstop gave an effective noise barrier whilst being clear, mitigated the appearance of height in the boundary walls.

RPC’s installation experience enabled us to design posts that could be hung from the in-situ concrete walls whilst still being able to transmit loads to the roof deck.
